What To Wear For Family Photos | Norman, Oklahoma Family Photographer

I’m a mom to 3 so I totally understand how picking out outfits for your family photo session can feel like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be! As your experienced family photographer, I hope to make this process as smooth and easy as possible. Imagine a collection of photos that beautifully captures your family’s unique personality, style, and connection. To help achieve this, I’ve put together some practical tips on what to wear, ensuring everyone looks and feels their best. Let’s dive in and make your session absolutely gorgeous!

THINGS TO INCLUDE

Enhance your look with these tips to create cohesive, stylish, and flattering outfits.

Accessories: Incorporate jewelry, hats, suspenders, knee-high socks, cardigans, vests, and hair bows to add layers and interest to your photos.

Color Palette: Select 2-3 colors within the same tone and blend in some neutrals to avoid a too-matchy look.

Patterns and Textures: Mix patterns like stripes with florals or plaids with polka dots, and include textures such as velvet, lace, crochet, and corduroy to add visual appeal.

Colored Pants: For a neutral or earthy palette, avoid blue denim jeans as they can disrupt the look. Opt for complementary colored chinos in shades like olive, burgundy, khaki, or grey instead.

Outfits with Movement: Choose flowy outfits for girls to create magical, dynamic images. Avoid stiff, tight fabrics. Consider flowy maxi dresses and skirts for an elegant look, or wide-leg pants, colored trousers, and shorter dresses for a more casual vibe.

Flattering Fits: Highlight your favorite features without hiding your entire body. Shift dresses can be unflattering; instead, choose a flowy wrap maxi that highlights your curves without being overly tight.

THINGS TO AVOID

Your family should be the focus of your photos. Avoid these distractions:

Bright Neon Colors: Neon shades can be distracting and cast unwanted colors on your skin.

Athletic Tennis Shoes: Ensure your footwear matches your outfit. Bright neon athletic shoes can detract from the overall look. Opt for casual shoes like Sperrys, Hey Dudes, boots, booties, or neutral-colored sandals.

Large Logos: Logos can be distracting in photos.

Babydoll Dresses: These dresses, being very loose and shapeless, can make you appear larger, especially when bending over.

Everyone in Jeans: Vary the styles and colors of pants to add diversity.

Loud Patterns: These can be too distracting and take the focus away from you.

Over-matching: Instead of everyone wearing the same color, coordinate with 2-3 colors and some neutrals to add variety.

Too Much Black: All-black outfits can lack depth. Mix in colors like whites, tans, greys, or ivories to break up the black.

Same Patterns: Avoid repeating the same pattern. Mix different patterns, like stripes with florals, for a more balanced look.

I hope these tips make choosing your family’s outfits a little easier! Remember, I’m always here to help you. All you have to do is text or email me photos of the outfits you’re considering and I can help you choose :)
