How to Prepare Your Kids for a Fun, Laid-Back Family Photo Session l Norman, Oklahoma Family Photographer

Getting your family ready for a photo session can feel like a big task—especially when you’re trying to keep your kids happy and excited. But here’s the thing: my family photo sessions are laid-back, fun, and designed to capture the heart of your family in the most natural way possible. So, if you’re wondering how to prepare your little ones (and yourself!) for a great experience, I’ve got a few tips to help things go smoothly.

**Remember, the goal isn’t perfectly posed photos where everyone sits still—it's about capturing the real, joyful moments that tell your family’s story. Let’s dive into how you can make sure your kids are ready for all the fun!

1. Set Expectations with Your Kids (But Keep It Light!)

Before the session, have a little chat with your kids about what to expect. Let them know this isn’t going to be a “sit still and smile” kind of thing, but more like an adventure! You could say something like, "We’re going to explore, play some games, and maybe even laugh a lot!" This way, they see it as a fun activity, not something formal or stressful. Keeping the mood light helps take the pressure off, and when your kids feel like they're in for a good time, they’re much more likely to enjoy the session.

2. Keep the Day of the Session Relaxed

Kids pick up on our energy, so if you’re stressed about getting everyone out the door, they’ll likely feel that too. Try to plan ahead by laying out outfits the night before, and giving yourselves plenty of time to get ready without rushing. The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your kids will be—and that’s when the best moments happen. Think of the session as an opportunity to just be with your family, not something you have to “get through.”

3. Avoid Eating in the Car on the Way to the Session

While it's important to make sure your kids aren’t hungry during the session (because no one is happy when they’re hungry!), I recommend avoiding snacks in the car right before we start. Car rides and snacks can lead to crumbs, spills, and food stuck in little teeth—not exactly the look you’re going for in your photos! Instead, make sure they’ve had a chance to eat a little something before you head out, and that they’re full enough to last through the session. This way, everyone will be in a good mood without any last-minute wardrobe or tooth cleaning emergencies!

4. Dress for Comfort and Movement

Since my sessions are relaxed and involve a lot of movement—walking, playing, and exploring—I always recommend dressing your kids (and yourselves) in outfits that are comfortable. Choose clothing they feel good in, and that lets them move freely. If your child has a favorite dress that makes them want to twirl, or shoes they can run in, let them wear it! Their comfort will shine through in the photos.

Need help with coordinating outfits or color schemes? I’m happy to offer suggestions to make sure everyone looks great while staying comfortable!

5. Let Your Kids Be Themselves

Here’s something I always want my clients to know: your kids don’t need to be “perfect” for these photos. Some of the best shots come from those spontaneous moments when they’re twirling, laughing, or just being themselves. That’s where the magic is! Don’t worry if they want to be a little silly or show their personality. Whether they’re running around, giving a big belly laugh, or snuggling up with you, these are the moments we want to capture. It’s all part of telling your family’s unique story.

6. Relax and Enjoy the Process

This one’s for you, parents: it’s okay to let go of the idea that everything needs to go just right. The best family photos happen when everyone is relaxed and having fun, and that includes you! Don’t stress about getting the “perfect” shot—I’ve got that covered. Your only job is to enjoy the time with your family, and I’ll capture those real, meaningful moments along the way. The less pressure you feel, the more joyful the experience will be for everyone.

A Laid-Back, Fun Experience for the Whole Family

At the end of the day, my family sessions are all about capturing the heart of your family—just as you are. These sessions aren’t about stiff poses or forced smiles; they’re about creating a space where you and your kids can feel comfortable, have fun, and make some beautiful memories.
So come ready to laugh, explore, and embrace the laid-back vibe. I can’t wait to capture the magic of your family, one joyful moment at a time!
