Newborn Session Prep Guide

  • What to expect

I will send you an email with available session dates within 24 hours (on weekdays) of your inquiry.

Once we have decided on a date and time, I will send you the contract and invoice for you to sign and pay your 50% retainer to reserve your session date.

Next you will receive a welcome email and family questionnaire to fill out if I haven’t photographed your family before. This helps me get to know you all so we can better connect during your session.

I will send you an email one week before your session date to touch base and go over any last minute details and answer any questions you may have.

You will receive a confirmation text from me the day before your session.

I will have your photos edited and your gallery delivered to you within 2 weeks of your session date.

  • What to wear

Your outfits should reflect your true style and be comfortable. I do not recommend matching outfits for anyone in the family but rather coordinating. I encourage you to check out my Pinterest board for ideas on color themes that go well together. I’m happy to consult you on your wardrobe if you need help deciding what would look best. If at all possible, bring the shirts or outfits on hangers and change into them when you get to the studio (if we aren’t doing an in-home session) so they won’t be wrinkled from the car ride.

  • How to prepare

Have outfit choices picked out days before the session. Try everything on you and your children to make sure items fit well and are comfortable. If your clothes are brand new, wash them and get out all wrinkles. If they aren’t brand new, please still make sure they are free of wrinkles. Allow plenty of time to get ready and arrive on time if you’re coming to the studio. If you’re stressed out, it doesn’t make for a great session, so take a breath and know that I will understand that life with a new baby is hard, and I won’t be upset if we don’t start right on time.

  • In-home sessions

Your house doesn’t need to be spotless! We’ll most likely spend time photographing in the nursery, your bedroom, and the living room. I’ll look for locations with the best light. It makes for nicer photos if the clutter is picked up but I can move things as I photograph also.

  • Time

You know your baby’s sleep pattern and when you’ll be feeling the best for photos. You just let me know when you feel like a good time will be for the session. Generally mid day between 11 am -2 pm work well for the best light inside homes as well as my studio.

  • Session flow

I like to start with the family group photos first. I’ll direct you into different natural “poses” but it won’t feel like posing, I promise! Next I’ll get some shots of just your baby. We’ll most likely stop several times during the session for feeding, diaper changes, spit up clean up, and whatever else we need to do to make your baby happy. That’s perfectly okay! The session will flow smoothly and naturally.

  • What to have or bring

A few different outfit options for your baby.

Your favorite receiving blankets for your baby. When you look back on these photos in 20 years, it will be nice to reminisce over certain outfits and items.

If your baby has a “lovie” or special stuffed animal, let’s document that!
