What to wear for your family photo session | Oklahoma Family Photographer

I get it, planning a family photo session can feel both exciting and overwhelming. One of the biggest struggles for parents is knowing what to wear.

But here’s what you need to know.. I’ve got your back and am here to help you rock that camera-ready look effortlessly!

When it comes to choosing the perfect outfits for your family, I understand the struggle of coordinating colors, styles, and themes.

Below you’ll find some useful tips for how to choose your family’s outfits.

HELPFUL STYLING TIPS

Things to include:

  • Coordinating colors: Choose a color palette with 2-3 coordinating colors and sprinkle in some neutrals.

  • Patterns and textures: Don’t be afraid to mix patterns such as stripes and florals on different family members. Textures like linen, waffle, lace, crochet, and corduroy add visual interest.

  • Accessories: Thing like jewelry, hats, hair bows, suspenders, cardigans, and knee high socks can add layers and help pull the overall look together.

  • Colored pants: If you’re going for an all neutral look (my fave!), ditch the blue jeans. Instead, use complimentary colored chinos such as khaki, grey, olive, or navy.

  • Outfits with movement: For girls, pick outfits that can be flowy and show a lot of movement in your images. Flowy maxi dresses are great for this. Opt for wide leg pants for a more casual look.

Things to avoid:

  • Neon colors: For the love of god just don’t! Neon colors cause unflattering color casts on skin and are just distracting in general.

  • Tennis shoes: Athletic tennis shoes can very quickly throw off the entire look we’re going for. Instead, choose casual shoes such as Sperrys, Hey Dudes, boots, booties, or neutral colored sandals.

  • Large logos: Unless it fits with the vibe of the session I usually do not recommend graphic tees with logos.

  • Small stripes: Small stripes like pinstripes have a warping effect in camera and your outfit will end up looking like one of those trippy wall posters that make your eyes hurt.

  • Matching outfits and patterns: For example, don’t put all the boys in plaid, or all the girls in floral, or everyone in jeans and white shirts.

I hope this post has been helpful and I’m always happy to help you decide what would look best. It’s not uncommon for families to text me photos of their outfits if they need help deciding.
